Oh no, another acronym to remember! Don’t worry it’s an easy one. ANC stands for Active Noise Cancellation, casually known as just “noise cancelling”. Our Immerse Headphones use this technology to deliver comfortable, private listening, making them perfect for studying and commuting. Very useful in this noisy world!
It’s slightly oxymoronic isn’t it? Headphones that cancel noise? Even the technology seems confusing on the surface, as ANC actually produces the sound that it’s trying to block out. Weird, we know, but it works.
What is ANC good for?
Your headphones and earphones already work as a passive noise reducer, blocking out some of the background noise so you can enjoy your favourite podcasts or playlists. But do you ever find yourself cranking the volume up to tune out noise? This inevitably ends up as a competition of who and what’s louder, rather than actually helping erase the external sound.
This is where headphones with ANC swoop in on a white horse, because they help to cancel out that annoying background noise. This means you can listen at a healthier volume, which is more comfortable for your ears and in turn saves battery power. What a hero!
Where did ANC come from?
Originally designed for airline pilots to block out engine noise on long-haul flights, the technology of noise-cancellation is quickly becoming a part of everyday life. And you don’t even need to be listening to audio to reap the benefits; some people simply wear their headphones at work with the ANC switched on to eliminate the sound of office chatter, or on the daily commute to neutralise the constant noise of heavy traffic and the rumble of engines.
So how does ANC work?
Firstly, the “Active” in ANC refers to the technology reactively responding to the noises around you, which requires a built-in rechargeable battery for power. This also means you can choose when to have the ANC on or off.
But how does it actually “react” to the noise around you? Here are 3 quick steps that explain it…
- A built-in microphone in the earpiece listens for external noise. Whether you’re studying in a busy café or surrounded by people on your daily commute, there will be plenty of ambient noises for the headphones to pick up.
- The ANC technology then processes the ambient noise being picked up by the microphone and produces opposing or negative matching sound waves, which cancel out the noise before it reaches your ears.
- The opposing waves that are created by the ANC circuitry are then blended seamlessly into the speakers, along with your chosen audio, leaving you to experience more of the uninterrupted sound you want to hear.
There you go, simple science!
Why do we love ANC so much?
Because it means you only hear the music you love! It means no more pretending you’re asleep on planes or missing the best bits of your audiobook. ANC really is your ultimate travel, commute and work companion, whether you choose to “actively” listen or not.
We use ANC in some of our headphones, to give you the best listening experience possible, including our new District Bluetooth Headphones with ANC and Qi These innovative new over-ear headphones use ANC to block out any external noise. Plus they use new Qi wireless charging, which means no more wires to charge your headphones. Don’t know how Qi charging works yet? Fear not, we will explain that as well in our blog soon!
