Now that the Awards Season is over, we’ve taken a look back at the winners, losers, shocks, and surprises:
MOBO: 4th Nov 2016
We all saw it coming: Drake won Best International Act, which isn’t that surprising considered his last album went quadruple platinum in the US.
We’ll never forget: The wrong act was announced and given the award for Best Song, leaving poor Wstrn having to hand it over to MC Abra Cadabra.
Golden Globes: 8th Jan 2017
Biggest shock: Meryl Streep found herself in the firing line for bringing politics into her acceptance speech for the Lifetime Achievement Award.
We all saw it coming: La La Land was the rather obvious choice, and it went on to confirm all our suspicions, winning all seven of the awards that it was nominated for.
We’ll never forget: Jimmy Fallon trying (and failing) to improvise after his teleprompter machine broke – but he carried on like a trooper!
Grammys: 12th Feb 2017
Biggest shock: Twenty One Pilots dropped their trousers and picked up their award for WHAT in their underpants, because they had promised themselves they would if they ever won a Grammy.
We all saw it coming: The four trophies given posthumously to David Bowie were well-deserved, if a little bittersweet.
We’ll never forget: Adele breaking up her Grammy for Album of the Year because she wanted to share it with Beyonce, Mean Girls style
NME Awards: 15th Feb 2017
Biggest shock: 1975 came back from winning Worst Band in 2014 to be nominated for Best British Band, Best Album, and Best Track, and win their nomination for Best Live Band. Not a bad come back – and you can read our exclusive review of their concert here.
We all saw it coming: The night revealed another snub to Beyoncé, only winning one out of the five awards she was nominated for, leaving her album unloved again.
We’ll never forget: Busted presenting the Best International Band award to Metallica. What did they talk about afterwards?
Brits: 22nd Feb 2017
Biggest shock: The background video for 1975’s performance, taken from their latest music video, threw people into confusion when undesirable quotes from real reviews flashed up behind them as they performed. A controversial angle for the band to take, which briefly had people worrying they’d been hacked, but nevertheless entertaining and a fantastically satirical comeback to the bands’ critics!
We all saw it coming: No one even raised an eyebrow when Little Mix shouted out to their exes, and who can blame us – we’ve been hearing about one of them at least for months now.
We’ll never forget: Donald Trump and Theresa May as skeletons dancing while white houses tried not to fall off the stage. Another Katy Perry classic.
Biggest shock: Mel Gibson’s redemption from being nominated for Worst Supporting Actor in 2014 to winning the Razzie Redeemer Award is truly monumental (but sadly not guaranteed to last knowing the Razzies’ reputation for indecision).
We all saw it coming: Zoolander 2 was always a bit of a marmite film so it’s not a massive surprise that it was completely panned.
We’ll never forget: Misconduct winning The Barry L. Bumstead Award. Or maybe we will – what was it about again?
Oscars: 26th Feb 2017
Biggest shock: We never thought a mistake like this could happen at the Oscars, but it unfolded in front of our eyes: Best Picture went to La La Land mistakenly, and then had to be handed over to the real winners, Moonlight.
We all saw it coming: As soon as Lin-Manuel Miranda took to the stage we knew that it was going to be a classic, and Auli’l Cravahlo performed beautifully creating a new classic.
We’ll never forget: Viola Davis finally winning an Oscar after being nominated for the third time, proving that anyone can be anything.
